City Council will consider accepting the donation of the chapel “Chapel” building located at 220 Main Street which is currently owned by Northgate Church at the February 1, 2021 Regular City Council Meeting. The Northgate Church desires to remove the chapel to expand parking facilities and has offered to donate the structure to the City of Haslet. The 1,800 sq. ft. building was constructed in 1923 .
The City Council included funds in the city’s long-range Strategic Plan approved September 21, 2020 for necessary expenses related to accepting the donation. The project was included as a Short-Term Quality of Life Project for Fiscal Years 2021-2022.
Since approval of the Strategic Plan, City Council directed staff to provide estimates of costs associated with accepting the donation of The Chapel building which include moving the building and relocating it to a city-owned property, construction of the necessary foundation and updates to bring the building into compliance with city ordinances, and updates to make the building functional. This would include the addition of plumbing for bathrooms and modifications to bring the building into compliance with the American Disabilities Act, among other necessary code-required updates.
At the December 14, 2020 City Council meeting, staff provided a report, available here, detailing estimates received for moving and rehabilitating The Chapel. As all of City Council was not in attendance, Council tabled the item until the February 1, 2021 regular meeting so that all of Council would be in attendance to consider whether or not to accept the donation and commit the funds needed to move and rehabilitate the building to comply with city codes and ordinances.
