It is vitally important that everyone be counted. A conservative estimate of a 1% undercount in Texas could cost the State well over $300 million per year for ten years.
The first Census was in 1790 and this will be the 24th Census in the history of the United States. Information gathered from the Census is very important and used to determine how congressional seats are distributed in the US House of Representatives. The Census reflects population growth and shifts. Census information is used to draw key districts such as school districts, enforce voting rights, make informed planning, business and non-profit organization decision and determines distribution of Federal Funds to all sorts of programs such as Head Start, Medicaid, county hospitals, community development block grants, school districts, and many more.
Your information is safe and confidential. It is illegal for the US Census Bureau to share census information with any other government agencies or anyone. Census workers will have a badge to identify themselves, a handheld device for data entry, and a backpack or briefcase. A census worker will never ask you for social security numbers, bank account numbers, personal passwords or donations. If someone comes to your door identifying themselves as a census worker in the next several months and you want to verify their identity, you can call the US Census Bureau at 972-510-1800.
